Happiness vs. Joy

August 13, 2017

People very often say “money and things can’t buy you happiness.” I disagree with that. I think money & things CAN buy you happiness. I think money and earthly things can bring SO much happiness. But happiness is temporary and fading. I know that money & things can’t bring you joy. Joy is the result when we put our hope and trust into something that won’t fade away. Something that’s eternal.

I know that so many people have lots of money, and they have pretty much everything they’ve ever wanted. And you know what? They’re empty. They say they’re lost and feel hopeless. But, they were happy for awhile when they got the new car they wanted, or they went on their dream vacation. They were happy for a while, until those things started to fade away.

I’m completely guilty of this, and I know i’m not alone. It’s hard to hope in something that we can’t see, & it’s so easy to put our happiness in these worldly things that we can get almost immediately. Our world has come to a point where we can get things immediately, and it’s so good sometimes, but sometimes, its not. When Jesus calls us to trust and WAIT, it’s hard for us to do that. But in 1 John, it says

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes and pride and possessions – is not from the father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

This isn’t saying we can’t love anything in this world. It’s just saying that we shouldn’t be placing our hope, trust, and everything we have into these earthly things because if we hope in that, then we’ll pass away with this world.

You can describe happiness as a feeling of pleasure, or contentment, or comfort. But feelings are temporary. They come and go based upon our circumstances. Happiness isn’t a fiber of your being, because you can go from happy, to sad, to angry in a matter of minutes. But that’s not what defines you. Joy is the fiber and foundation of your soul. A joyful soul becomes the root of all your emotions. It has the power to peak light into any situation we ever face. Joy overcomes everything.

We may not always be happy, but we should always be joyful serving the Lord.
